Ryo's Appearance in DIGIMON TAMERS (episodes 42-51)

This is a short analysis of the episodes 42-51, Ryo's time in the Real World. Ryo returns home to Kyushu with his father in episode 42 and returns to Tokyo as Justimon in episode 45 to help defeat the D-Reaper.

EPISODE 42 - The City Attacked by the D-Reaper, The Tamer's Resolve

Ryo and his father land at the Fukuoka airport and when they try to drive home, a bunch of reporters attack them with questions:

REPORTER: Hey, hey, Akiyama-kun! Where have you been this past year?
REPORTER 2: How do you feel now that you're back home? Is that Digimon you have related to that bubble in Shinjuku...
RYO'S DAD: Ryo's tired. Please stop askin' questions now.

I'd say Ryo is famous and interesting to the reporters because he was missing for almost a year and showed up at the same time as the unknown bubble in Shinjuku. Sure people playing Digimon cards know about him and call him the Legendary Tamer but does the general public also?

Ryo, his dad and Monodramon drive away and Ryo tries to have a light conversation with his father, even though he was missing for 10 months and left his dad worried sick about him. He's such an ass in this scene. His dad is angry at him of course and will probably stay like that for a while.

RYO: Aah... what a mess... Ah, by the way, I haven't introduced you yet, right?
MONODRAMON: I'm Monodramon!
DAD: You evil thing!
RYO: What's that about? You're kidding, right?

His dad's eyes tear up and Ryo finally feels bad and apologizes. Taking things lightly until they actually endanger someone might be a way Ryo'd learned to cope with things? He does have this laid back vibe, teases Ruki a lot but is completely serious in serious situations - I guess he doesn't know how to behave around his dad, since what he did is pretty unforgivable.

Monodramon starts to press different buttons in the car and makes Ryo's dad angry: "Stop touchin' everything!" ((the -in' verbs in the subs are hints that they speak in a Kyushu dialect))

The drive continues in silence. Ryo listens to news on the radio reporting on the Shinjuku situation.

EPISODE 46 - The Refreshing Ultimate Warrior, Justimon Appears!

Justimon shows up in the end of episode 45 but we recognize him as Ryo and Cyberdramon in the beginning of episode 46. He has the most outrageous re-appearance ever. Not only does the title of the episode introduce him as the coolest guy ever, he unexpectedly lands from the sky on a tall building with Ryo&Cyberdramon Best Tamer song playing in the background, he then does the most outrageous (can I even use this word in this context?) thing ever and introduces himself and demonstrates his outrageous special attack.

JUSTIMON: Justimon, Cyberdramon's Ultimate form. His special attack is... Justice Kick!
...
Yo!
RUKI: Yeah, I get it. There's only one person with that annoying "refreshing" presence.
HIROKAZU: It's Ryo-san!
...
JUSTIMON: When I saw what was happening in Tokyo, I couldn't just sit around. So I flew here.

Hirokazu and Ruki are the only ones reacting to him, the rest are probably too shocked from what they just had to witness. At least his initial introduction is followed by Ryo's usual "Yo!" ... Ruki's comment hits the bull's eye in this scene. I mean I like Ryo but this scene would be so much better if he just said "Yo!". That'd actually be cute.

Anyway, the super Justimon then kicks away an agent trying to attack Sakuyamon and tries to keep D-Reaper's attention away from Sakuyamon and SaintGalgomon so that they can go and save Dukemon.

JUSTIMON: Leave this to me! You guys go help Dukemon!

The two of them go and Hirokazu and Guardromon stay behind to help Justimon. He seems to have good fighting skills but doesn't defeat the agent until Ruki, Jian and Antylamon come back to help him. Guardromon helps too and Hirokazu is ecstatic when Justimon thanks them for saving him from an agent's attack. He tells everything about it to Kenta later when they're at Ruki's house.

HIROKAZU (to Kenta): And Ryo-san even said "Thanks" to me, am I super cool or what?
RYO: He's making a big deal out of it...
JIAN: He can't help it. You've always been a hero for Hirokazu, after all.

Ryo can do the most outrageously """cool""" things and call himself the Digimon King (to tease Ruki) or one of the few powerful Tamers who can manage a Device card (episode 29) but in the meantime he always feels Hirokazu is exaggerating when he treats him as a hero/legend. I think I kind of like this characteristics of his, it doesn't feel like he's pretending to be humble. And he'd be unbearable if he just agreed with Hirokazu's worshipping. But he's not. I always thought he was just a really nice guy (that does some obnoxious things every once in a while).

Siuchun tells the group Culumon and Impmon disappered in the bubble but noone listens to her. Instead, Ryo gives her the superduper Device card only truly strong Tamers can handle because Antylamon saved him from a D-Reaper agent before. This scene would be less outrageous if he just gave her a normal card, urgh.

RYO: You're already a first-class Tamer, huh? I'll give you this.
SUZIE: What's that?
RYO: A Device Card. "Device" means something like "Crest".
SUZIE: Cool!

The scene when Lopmon jumps out of the HQ window to go fight with the others and Suichun empowers him with Ryo's card would stay as epic as it is even if she got a less powerful card.

EPISODE 47 - Save Dukemon! Grani Scramble

Ryo and Cyberdramon go fight the D-Reaper, the true enemy, before the rest of the group wakes up in the morning. Ryo doesn't tell them where he's going, they just notice he's gone. Cyberdramon is still on the mission of finding his arch-enemy and Ryo's used to work alone and continues to do it.

He's an interesting lone wolf - confident and extraverted, good with people, but always doing things alone (with his Digimon). Cyberdramon's instinct to fight often clouds his judgment on whether it makes sense to fight a certain opponent (like if it's even strong enough to be the true enemy (Megadramon) or if he's strong enough to have a chance defeating it:

CYBERDRAMON: I can still fight.
RYO: I'm telling you, it's impossible.
(Justimon gets hit by an agent.)

Justimon returns to the rest of the Tamers later to help them fight other D-Reaper agents. The enemy is too strong and they only defeat them with Grani's help.

EPISODE 48 - The Power to Save Juri! Beelzebumon's Fist

Tamers find out the D-Reaper made horrible damage in the DigiWorld (RYO: "It won't last long...") and it spread around the Real World too. The fight against the enemy continues when they see Beelzebumon captured inside the bubble. They send Dukemon to go save Juri while the rest stay behind to fight off the agents. The mission fails and Tamers have to stay away when the United Nations come to deal with the enemy in the next episode.

EPISODE 50 - Crimson Knight, Dukemon! Save the People you Love

Shibumi finally creates the Red Card that will allow the Tamers to stay inside the D-Reaper bubble in their Mega forms. The trio meets when Jian sends a signal through his D-Power and Justimon appears not long after them:

JUSTIMON appears suddenly: I hope you haven't forgotten about us!
RYO: Yo!
TAKATO: Ryo-san!
RUKI: It's not like we forgot about you, though.

They slash the card and are finally able to enter the D-Reaper Zone. They fight the agents protecting the D-Reaper Mother. Hirokazu, Kenta and their Digimon continue fighting outside the Zone. Before the final battle begins the Tamers have a little moment and Ryo uses it to tease Ruki:

JIAN: [...] This is the final battle!
RUKI: This is a battle, huh? Not a battle in a game, but a real one.
(determined) And I'm the girl who's called the "Digimon Queen"!
SAKUYAMON: Ruki, but that's...
RYO: Sure, you are the Queen... But then I'm the King, right?
RUKI: Oh, shut up.
(Ryo laughs.)

D-Reaper connects the two worlds to erase them both and an enormous agent named the Reaper appears from the DigiWorld. Ryo tells Takato to leave the guy to them and go save Juri. Dukemon does so and almost gets defeated by the Mother but Grani sacrifices himself for him and Dukemon is able to evolve to his Crimson Mode by absorbing Grani's powers.

EPISODE 51 - The Power to Dream is Our Future

Justimon assesses that the Reaper is too strong to be defeated without them joining their powers into one attack. He asks Sakuyamon to hit his blade with all her powers so that the weapon would be powerful enough to cut the beast in half. Ruki doesn't like the idea but Ryo asks her to do it anyway:

RYO: We don't have enough power to defeat it by ourselves. But, if we could channel Sakuyamon's power into Justimon's blade, we could slice it in half!
RUKI: Like I said, it's too dangerous for you!
RYO: It's the only thing we can do. Please, Ruki!
RUKI (tearing up): In the end, you are the most reckless one (of us all)...
RYO: That's the first time you've praised me.
SAKUYAMON: Are you sure, Ruki?
RUKI (tears): We're here to win, and I believe in Ryo and Justimon!

Ruki and Ryo share a sincere moment together, without the load of rivalry or teasing. Sakuyamon gives Justimon her powers and Ryo survives the transmition.

RYO: We have Sakuyamon's power!
RUKI: Now it's all up to you.

Justimon uses the new blade to successfully cut the Reaper in half. The weapon is destroyed in the process but the Reaper survives and glues itself back in one piece. It's the four Sovereigns who defeat it in the end. SaintGalgomon has to go to the tunnel between the two worlds to rotate the D-Reaper into its original unevolved state. D-Reaper is sucked into the tunnel, Takato finally reaches Juri and the fihgt is over. The Red Card had a flaw and they can't stay in their Mega forms any longer but are saved by MarineAngemon.

The Tamers find out later in the park that in order to defeat the D-Reaper the Wild Bunch had to sacrifice the Digimon as well. They de-digivolve to their In-Training levels and have to return to the DigiWorld or they'd go back to being a program, like what happened to the D-Reaper. They say goodbye to eachother, the Digimon go back to their world and leave Tamers and us viewers stay behind in tears. The series ends with Takato finding the entrance to the DigiWorld open again.
