WONDERSWAN - Anode/Cathode Tamer: Veedramon Version
Release dates:Digimon Adventure: Anode Tamer and Digimon Adventure: Cathode Tamer are a pair of counterpart games, released in 2001 as a compilation of both under the name Anode/Cathode Tamer: Veedramon Version. The game is one of two Digimon WonderSwan games to be released in English and has a colorized version for WonderSwan Color. It differs from the earlier two games in making Veedramon available to the player without the special event that the former two required to get him.
STORY SYNOPSIS:
It's New Year's Eve in 1999 and Ryo's using his dad's laptop when he's interrupted by a sudden blackout. Agumon appears on the laptop screen and asks him to help him. A Digivice appears in Ryo's room and takes him to the DigiWorld. Agumon and Gennai explain to him that a new powerful enemy has imprisoned the DigiDestined and revived dangerous Digimon enemies. Ryo - as the only child who listened to Agumon and touched the Digivice - has to find and free enough Digimon allies to free the DigiDestined and beat the evil Millenniummon.
I finished this game on an online emulator. I'm a giant gaming noob and this is the first video game I've ever finished (and one of a few I've actually played). I only did it for the story so I didn't unlock any super special Digimon or variables and I defeated Millenniummon with the help of Veedramon, Patamon and Gatomon. I think it was only after I defeated Etemon that I found out how you can use the inventory to help Digimon fight or heal them, oops. I enjoy the game more in retrospective than I did playing it, although it had its pretty exciting moments (and Millenniummon was legit scary). I did become more interested in Ryo's whole story and will defininitely see him differently next time I watch Digimon Tamers.
The quotes are taken from Yesterday's amazing script translations. I've only changed the names of the Digimon because ugh I'll just forever stick to the dubbed ones.
New year's eve 1999. Ryo is on his father's computer in his studies. People on the internet are talking about the mysterious event that occured in summer and how it could be Digimon responsible for wrecking the town. Suddenly the room goes dark due to what seems to be a power failure, but then a Digimon appears on the computer. It's Agumon and he's asking Ryo to help him save the Digidestined.
A digivice appears in the room and Agumon asks Ryo to touch it. He does it, everything goes blank and he wakes up in the DigiWorld, where Agumon tries to explain the situation to him.
AGUMON: no, no, no it isn't! this isn't a dream! This is a digital world! This is the world inside a digital network, the kind that's inside a machine like a computer or a game!
[...] Machinedramon and Chimeramon became one, and the supposedly defeated Devimon and Etemon came back, and there was a time slip in the Digital World...
[...] Like I said, the network time had a time slip and created another world and Chimeramon and Machinedramon...
The ground suddenly opens and they both fall in. Agumon goes on explaining about the weird things like earthquakes and floods that have been going on in the DigiWorld.
Agumon then saves Ryo from Kuwagamon and gets him in a village where Digimon and Gennai were expecting the chosen child (PUCHIMERAMON: Ryo! I was waiting for you... You came to help us, didn't you?). Gennai tells Ryo the story of Millenniummon:
[...] Chimeramon and Machinedramon, these two digimon were originally merged by accident. After they were defeated by Taichi, in order to survive they merged themselves together.
RYO: That means they evolved into a very strong digimon?
GENNAI: Its name is Millenniummon. And he pretty much took over the Digital World. Millenniummon's dark power is so strong it's almost unmatched. He even warped "time" itself here on this world, and then destroyed it!
[...] Taichi is one of the Chosen Children who once defeated all of the evil digimon but then got caught by them. The only thing I could do was to warp Agumon here.
AGUMON: I accessed Taichi's computer in the human world and tried to find someone who could save us from this crisis. The only one who trusted me and touched the digivice is you, Ryo.
RYO: I see... I think I understand. We have to defeat Millenniummon, who is the fusion of Chimeramon and Machinedramon, in order to save Taichi and his friends. Oh, so that's why Agumon came to me and asked for help...
Ryo decides to do his best and try to save the Digidestined. Gennai suggests taking down evil Digimon groups one by one and making new allies on the way. He sends Ryo and Agumon to a nearby cave to defeat the first enemy group. This is when you start to walk around, explore the village and search for enemies to defeat. The final bosses of each enemy group are the badguys from Digimon Adventure - Devimon, Etemon, Myotismon and Piedmon.
After Ryo defeats the first group of enemies, Gennai gives him Taichi's Digivice. He can't use it to evolve Agumon though, because it doesn't belong to him, he can however use its power to turn the enemies into his allies during the fight. (I think I only managed to do that once.)
Ryo goes around kicking ass and saving the Digidestined from the evil Digimon bosses. The first two saved are Mimi and Koushiro after he defeats Devimon and Ryo can then use Palmon and Tentomon to fight on his side.
Defeating Etemon brings back Sora and Takeru and defeating Myotismon (who is really creepy) rescues Yamato, Hikari and Jou.
AGUMON: Gabumon! Gomamon! Gatomon! You'll all fight with us won't you?
GABUMON: Of course, leave it to us!
HIKARI: Please, Ryo, you've got to help my brother.
The last evil Digimon to defeat before fighting Millenniummon is Piedmon.
Ryo and the Digimon defeat Piedmon and go fight the final boss. First, however, they have to defeat all the bosses one more time before fighting Chimeramon. After they defeat him, he turns into Millenniummon:
A scary battle begins and Ryo defeats Millenniummon. Taichi is finally reunited with Agumon and it's time for all of the to return to the real world. The Chosen Children's Digimon thank Ryo for his help and he has to say goodbye to Agumon.
Ryo waves his new friends goodbye (RYO (sad): I won't forget you! I'll never forget you!), returns to the village where more Digimon thank him and after everything gets dark he wakes up back in his father's studies, with his mom standing behind him with a candle.
Both are a bit confused - Ryo's asking if he's back home and the mother is suspicious of the computer working without the electricity - when mr. Akiyama comes back home and suggests celebrating the new year. Ryo seems different to both parents ("He's really grown up, hasn't he?") and the game ends.
