Ryo's FAMILY

Ryo's family situation is a bit odd because he traveled from WonderSwan to Digimon Tamers dimension and somehow managed to keep at least one of his parents in the process. Mr. Akiyama appears in both dimensions and it's hard to say if they're the same person or not.

We first meet mr. Akiyama in Digimon Tamers, episode 41. He's one of the parents that Yamaki and the others asked to come to Shinjuku's Chuo Park to reunite with their children who were returning from the DigiWorld. He comes all the way from Kyushu to pick up Ryo (and be angry at him for disappearing 10 months ago without a word). Now that I think about it, it is kind of strange that everyone knew Ryo was coming back with the rest of the Tamers .. but then Takato could had messaged Yamaki about it or Yamaki just assumed Ryo could be coming back with the others, since the rumor going around that he disappeared to the DigiWorld was appearantly quite popular.

So, mr. Akiyama picks Ryo up and they return to Kyushu together. When they land in Fukuoka they're expected by a bunch or reporters that want to interview Ryo (about his disappearance I assume) but his dad asks them not to bother his son. They drive home by car and Ryo tries to engage him in smalltalk and introduces Monodramon to him, but his dad is too angry at him and can't just pretend the last 10 months never happened. He scolds his son harshly ("You evil thing!") and when Ryo finally realizes how much he hurt him (his eyes get teary), he apologizes and feels bad about it. Mr. Akiyama then yells at Monodramon as well, when the Digimon starts pushing random car buttons. Ryo and his dad speak in a local Kyushu dialect.

Digimon Series Memorial Book: Digimon Animation Chronicle revealed that this man really is Ryo's father and not just a random guy picking up Ryo in Shinjuku. He (and his beard) does however look different from the WonderSwan dad, who seems to be a well-off businessman.

We meet both of Ryo's parents in the first WonderSwan game, Anode/Cathode Tamer but we never see their faces. We can assume that the family is quite well-off because they live in a nice housing neighbourhood (probably in Tokyo) and Ryo's getting a laptop for Christmas. Ryo's seen chatting on his father's laptop in something that looks like a study room at the beginning of the game. In the end of the game (when Ryo returns from the DigiWorld) we meet the mother as well and judging from her clothes (she's wearing an apron) and the fact that she's not at work like her husband, she could be a housewife. And she's not too handy because she asks Ryo to fix the breaker when the lights go off after he gets summoned to the DigiWorld. Ryo's father brings him the new laptop in the last scene of the game and one of the parents suggests they should go visit a temple together, a Japanese New Year's tradition, hinting that they're in a good relationship.
